Blue Tea: everything you need to know




What is Blue Tea?


Blue tea is a theine-free drink made out of blue pea flowers, also called butterfly pea flowers. It is well-known for its bright blue color. Although it became popular in the Western world only recently, the blue pea flower has been known in Asia for centuries.


This flower can be used for many different purposes, such as natural dye and cosmetic products. Our favorite way to use it is, of course, to create an amazing earthy-flavored tea. But before talking about how to brew Blue Tea, let’s dive into its health benefits.



What are the benefits of blue tea?


Although more in-depth studies have to be conducted about the benefits of Blue Tea, we already have some promising information about it. Used in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance memory and treat stress, blue pea tea has also scientifically proven benefits!


1. It contains several antioxidant compounds.

This beautiful flower contains many antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage.


2. It may alleviate inflammation

Thanks to its healthy compounds, blue pea tea may alleviate inflammation and ultimately prevent cancer cell growth.


3. It supports skin and hair health

Blue pea flowers are used in many cosmetic products and sipping blue tea may also keep your skin and hair healthy and beautiful!


4. It may promote weight loss

Blue pea flowers may help when you’re trying to lose or manage weight, since it slows down the formation of fat cells.

How to brew blue tea (hot, cold, and latte)


As mentioned before, blue tea is very versatile as it can be enjoyed hot, cold, and with milk. It’s going to taste equally delicious if you add a sweetener of your choice, and if you decide to add some lemon or lime juice, its color is going to change to a bright purple!


How to brew blue tea (hot)

  1. Put 1 tea bag or 1.5 tsp per person of Blue Tea Mix in a sieve or a teapot.

  2. Warm up water to 95°C and add it to your cup or teapot.

  3. Add a sweetener of your choice or lemon/lime to change the color (optional)

  4. Steep for 3-5 minutes, or until you’ve reached your desired taste.

  5. Enjoy!


How to make cold-brewed blue tea

  1. Place 1 tea bag or 1.5 tsp of Iced Blue Tea Mix per cup at the bottom of a large container or glass pitcher.

  2. Pour room temperature water or cold water into the container/pitcher.

  3. Cover the container/pitcher and refrigerate.

  4. Steep for 8-12 hours.

  5. Remove the tea bags or the blue tea mix and discard (tea is compostable!).

  6. Serve over ice with fresh lemon slices and sweetener of your choice (lemon will change the color to purple!)


How to make blue tea latte

  1. Add loose Blue Tea Mix to a sieve or teapot or take a teabag.

  2. Allow the blue tea to steep in hot water for about 5 minutes, or until you’ve reached the desired coloration and taste

  3. Meanwhile, steam the milk.

  4. Pour the tea into a mug or glass and pour the milk on top.

  5. Drizzle honey or whatever sweetener you choose on top
